What is the essence of the procedure?
The cervix protects the uterus from external agents and secretes different types of mucus, depending on the stage of the monthly cycle. When examining the cervix, an altered structure of the endometrium may be found, which indicates a disease. A visual examination alone is not enough for the doctor to be sure of the diagnosis. In some cases, deep diagnostic tests are required that detect atypical areas, for example, with cervical dysplasia, leukoplakia, ectopia and erosion, polyps and genital warts. That's when they resort to a biopsy of the cervix.
This study determines the nature of the tissues in the endometrium: are they malignant or benign? Further diagnosis and therapy is recommended, depending on the results of the biopsy.
Is the procedure painful?
Since there are no nerve endings on the cervix, the biopsy is actually painless. However, the uterus can respond to the intervention with contractions and slight pulling pains.
In the case of a small size of the pathological focus, the biopsy plays a therapeutic role, since the altered cells are removed. In order to accurately determine the problem focus, a colposcopy is performed before the procedure. There are several types of cervical biopsy , their choice is up to the gynecologist, who takes into account the condition of the patient's cervix:
• colposcopic biopsy;
• endocervical scraping;
• aspiration biopsy.
How to prepare for the procedure
For 24 - 48 hours before a cervical biopsy, you should refrain from using vaginal balls, suppositories, creams, as well as sexual activity. You will also have to pass a number of routine examinations: smears for flora and oncocyotology, tests for STDs, general blood and urine tests, ultrasound of the pelvic ogans. You should plan your visit to the gynecologist in the first phase of the monthly cycle. After the intervention, dark vaginal discharge, slight pain, slight bleeding may appear.
Recovery period
During this period, intense physical activity, sports activities, and a visit to the pool are contraindicated. It is recommended to give up sex for a period of 14 days. If pain syndrome is expressed in the lower abdomen, with the permission of the doctor, analgesics can be taken.
You should immediately contact your gynecologist if:
• bright red bleeding appeared;
• menstruation after a biopsy lasts more than 7 days;

If the test result indicates that no abnormal cells were found, then the test is considered normal. However, in case of deviations from the norm, you may need further monitoring. Contraindications and complications
The procedure is absolutely contraindicated in patients with poor blood clotting, acute or chronic inflammatory processes of the genitourinary system. Relative contraindications: menstruation, pregnancy.
The main possible complication after a biopsy is bleeding. Usually it is moderate, which is easily stopped with hemostatic drugs. If necessary, hemostatic therapy is prescribed for 3-4 days. If, after the intervention, scars form on the cervix, then there is a risk of miscarriage.
Can the procedure be done to nulliparous women?
In the case of pathologies of the cervix, it is difficult to do without a biopsy. Only she gives concrete confirmation of a precancerous or cancerous condition. The procedure is prescribed to nulliparous women, however, it is carried out by the point method, a small tissue sample is taken under colposcopic control.
