What does the second trimester of pregnancy bring for the future mom, what should she be ready for, and what to expect? We will explore these important questions in this article.
In the second trimester, from the 14th to the 26th week of pregnancy, many women feel genuinely well for the first time. The fatigue of the first weeks fades, nausea usually disappears, and there is a surge of energy. At the same time, the belly is generally not yet large enough to interfere with daily life. Therefore, many pregnant women consider this period particularly pleasant, even calling it the “golden period” of pregnancy.
What to expect?
In some pregnant women, the belly grows significantly, while in others it is barely noticeable. A woman may notice a dark line on her belly. This line is called the “dark line” (Linea Nigra). It is caused by hormonal changes and is completely harmless. After childbirth, it usually disappears on its own.
The breasts enlarge, and now a more comfortable bra is needed. There may also be some milk leakage. This is completely normal.
Fetal movements and development
The baby becomes increasingly active. He or she moves a lot, rolls, stretches, frowns, and exercises muscles. Starting from the 18th week of pregnancy, the first movements can be felt. At first, they are often barely noticeable and can easily be mistaken for a bowel movement. Over time, however, the movements become more distinct.
The baby can already perceive sounds and respond to light or touch. He or she begins to recognize tastes and tactile sensations, such as pressure, cold, or pain. Weight gradually increases. The skin becomes smoother, and the first layers of fat are forming. By around the 20th week, the baby reaches the size of a coconut.
The main ultrasound (US) is usually performed between the 20th and 23rd weeks of pregnancy. It allows a thorough examination of all organs. During this scan, the baby’s sex can often be determined. If you want it to be a surprise, it’s best to inform your doctor in advance.
Common complaints in the second trimester
Although many women feel well, some unpleasant symptoms may appear during the second trimester. Lower abdominal pain or pulling sensations are often signs of fetal growth and muscle stretching. If these symptoms are mild and pass quickly, they are usually harmless.
Abdominal pain may also be caused by digestive issues such as bloating or constipation. Harmless diarrhea can also occur during pregnancy. It is important to drink enough fluids and maintain proper nutrition. However, if you experience severe pain, fever, or bleeding, you should immediately contact a gynecologist at the “Boholuby” Medical Center.
Fatigue may appear, but it is not as strong as in the early weeks of pregnancy. This can be caused by increased blood volume, lack of sleep, or iron deficiency. During the second trimester, iron, vitamin D, and folic acid are especially important.
What can you do in the second trimester?
Your baby is already listening. You can talk to him or her or play music. This strengthens the bond even before birth. Allow yourself quiet moments when you can consciously interact with your baby.
The second trimester is also a good time for a vacation if you are feeling well. Make sure you have enough time to rest and receive proper medical care. Pay attention to proper nutrition, hydration, and taking the necessary vitamins. You may already be thinking about childbirth. You can decide where to give birth and who will be with you.
Physical activity is undoubtedly beneficial. During this period, women often feel more flexible and resilient. You can start prenatal yoga or continue light exercise. But it is important not to overexert yourself! Listen carefully to your body and enjoy the “golden period” of pregnancy.
