Not all women dream of a lush breast, there are those who would like to have a more modest size . In such cases, reduction mammoplasty comes to the rescue , and, in simple terms, breast reduction. Women resort to such intervention for various reasons, which can be both congenital and acquired. Qualified plastic surgeons with successful experience in reduction mammoplasty work at Bogolyuby Medical Center , who are ready to help you solve this delicate problem.
What does the procedure include?
Breast reduction involves the removal of part of the tissues - fatty, glandular and skin - from which the breast is formed. The procedure is invasive , requiring general anesthesia.
Breast size depends on genetic factors, the amount of circulating sex hormones, body weight. In women, estrogens are the most important sex hormones, as they make a decisive contribution to the maturation of the vagina, uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.
In addition to the amount of circulating estrogens, it is very important to consider the degree of sensitivity of breast tissue to their action.
When is breast reduction indicated?
Of course, reduction mammoplasty pursues primarily aesthetic goals, but not only. Large breasts, in fact, can be the cause of a number of problems, for example: chronic back, neck and shoulder pain; chronic / recurrent dermatitis that occurs under the breast; difficulties during sleep, difficulties with a suitable posture due to bulky chest; aesthetic discomfort.
Intervention can be performed on patients of any age, but it is better to do this after pregnancy. Breasts in pregnant women increase, which will make the operation partially useless.
In most cases, reduction mammoplasty is for women, but in some cases it can also be performed for men. Breast reduction is indicated for men suffering from gynecomastia. This disease can be due to genetic, hormonal, pharmacological or other causes and often has consequences for patients so severe that surgical intervention is necessary.
What are the risks?
In general, breast reduction is safe. However, there are certain risks, these are:
• bleeding;
• wound infection;
• hematomas;
• Loss of sensation in the nipples and/or areola. Due to nerve damage, it is manifested by the inability of the nipple to swell;
• asymmetry between the two breasts due to differences in the shape and/or size of the two breasts. In these cases, a second corrective surgery may be required.
How to prepare?
reduction mammoplasty requires preparation from the patient.
It is necessary to stop (at least temporarily) from smoking, as cigarette smoke slows down the healing process. In addition, the suspension of any drug therapy based on the use of antiplatelet drugs, anticoagulants and anti-inflammatory drugs is required, since these drugs, by reducing blood clotting, predispose to bleeding.
What to expect?
After the operation, the patient experiences pain in the chest: this is completely normal, the pain subsides after taking painkillers. The discharge occurs a day or two after the intervention. You should be prepared for the fact that during the first week the breast will be swollen, with hematomas and overly sensitive. In 2-3 weeks the situation should return to normal. Postoperative scars can remain deep red for at least 6 weeks. It is recommended to wear a sports bra instead of a regular one for a month.
